Last Tuesday, many science students from West participated in the regional Longs Peak Science and Engineering Fair. The fair was held at the Island Grove Event Center in downtown Greeley. Students ranging from Fort Collins to Loveland to other plains located high schools and middle schools participated in the fair as well. There were over 60 high school projects and over 300 middle school projects.

The Longs Peak Science and Engineering Fair gave students the opportunity to display and showcase a science related project of their choice. Students were able to demonstrate what they have learned in their science classes and execute a well-constructed project and presentation on which they were being evaluated on. Students were being judged by industry professionals and university professors from all over on their projects’ quality and presentation.

Science teacher Mr. Zachary Armstrong encourages any student to partake in the science fair for the years to come. “The science fair is open for anyone to participate in,” he stated. Although Every AP science student was required to present a project, any student interested can participate regardless of what science course they are enrolled in.

Many opportunities even come with participating in the science fair. Junior Katie Gorsline and Senior Allen Ollmedo-Soto were able qualify for state. Ollmedo-Soto also received a $1000 scholarship for winning the chemistry division on project based on nitrogen content found in manure.

“Qualifying for state has been a great confidence booster due to the fact that I am planning to pursue a strictly science based career” he added.
