The new turf field at Greeley West High School was supposed to open on Saturday.  But mother nature has it on a two-week delay.

The new opening date is set for September 18. The turf field is finished and the track needs to be laid and stripped. Once the track is done being stripped, it will be ready to go.

The amount of rain Greeley had received over the summer had caused ruts from tires to be printed into the turf. The workers tried to just roll the tires marking out with a roller, however it did not work. The only thing they could do was lift the turf, remove the dirt that had been ruined and replace that dirt with new dirt.

Ken Denning, the Greeley West Athletic Director, commented on the field taking longer. “The field had a couple minor issues, but now that they are fixed the field is in great shape.”

Once the field and track are ready to go, many activities will be ready to be held here at West’s campus. There will be football, soccer, and track practice held at the fields. There will also be every level of soccer games, lower level football, and every level track. Varsity football will continue to be played at District 6 Stadium.

The opening day this year will just be another day, but Denning is planning on having the grand opening day next year. “We are planning on celebrating this field at the beginning of next year with naming the stadium and hopefully having a scoreboard. I’m truly just excited to have it all. I can’t wait to see how it looks and works once it’s all ready to go,” Denning said.
