On Wednesday, the Greeley West wrestling team lost to town rival, Greeley Central. Although West and Central face each other every year in a huge city rival, Alonzo Ruiz faced Central for the very first time.

Alonzo Ruiz is a senior at Greeley West. Ruiz just recently moved to Greeley from Utah. Back in Utah, Ruiz wrestled for seven years, took eight years off, and started up again his sophomore year of high school. With such a recent start to wrestling again, Ruiz believed he did pretty good.

On Wednesday night, the team of 12 began its match at 6 p.m. Ruiz wrestled against an opponent who was in a higher weight class than he is. “The guy was bigger than me but I think I held my own pretty well,” said Ruiz.

The ending score was 48-6, Greeley West lost. “I think it went pretty good. We did the best that we could do and that’s all that should matter. The rivalry was fun to see. I had a lot of fun,” said Ruiz.
