The 2018 Longs Peak Science and Engineering Fair was held at Island Grove on Tuesday, February 15. Greeley West’s science department holds their own science fair a few weeks before the LPSEF to send some of the SP students onto this. This science fair can send kids to state and nationals to compete with their project.

Greeley West ended up sending 19 students to the science fair from AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Biology HL, and AP Physics 2. Most of these students went early in the morning to participate as judges for the junior science fair. The junior science fair consisted of middle school kids and under.

Junior Nash Mohdreza stated, “I think judging was a huge help to competing later. It helped tell us what judges were looking for and what they will ask. It also was really cool to grade these projects and see what middle school kids can do.”

After judging it was time for the senior group to compete. The kids presented to up to six judges to try and win awards and money. They presented for four hours straight and then it was time for awards.

Greeley West was able to send one student on to State who competed in the Biology division. Lupita Nabor took first in the Biology division which was enough to move on. She also earned a $1000 scholarship for her project.  Ethan Shepherd, Colin McKee, Autumn Truitt and, and Katie Gorsline all got second place in their division. Ezekiel Quinones and Jarod Clark both got third place in their division.

Money was awarded to these top three contestants in their divisions as well.
