Freshman takes big role in first theater performance
November 22, 2016
Every fall, the theatre department puts on the fall play. It is always big decision what play Ms. Peggy Freemole will pick. This year she picked Peter in the Starcatcher.
Peter and the Starcatcher is a comedy play. The play is a prequel to Peter Pan where the audience learns the back story of famous characters like Peter, Captain Hook, and Schmee.
This play has 12 actors in it. Eleven of those 12 actors are boys in the play and the one left over is a girl actor. The boy-heavy play was picked particularly for the amount of male Thespians in the school.
Often times, Freemole casts juniors and senior who have experience in smaller roles in previous plays. But this year, one young actor caught her eye. It was a freshman boy named Wyatt Sands. He isn’t just in the play either, he is one of the leads in the play.
“A lot of my friends were in the play so I thought I’d give it a shot,” Sands said.
The cast has helped make Sands feel comfortable. “It hasn’t been intimidating at all being the only freshman. The whole casts help me with whatever I need and they have made it really fun for me,” Sands.
Sands also gets to work with his big brother who is a junior at Greeley West. His name is Lake but that wasn’t the only person Wyatt knew coming into this play. Sands stated, “It’s been really cool being able to work with my older brother Lake but he’s not the only one I’ve known. I’ve known most of the actors in the play but I did have to meet a few of them. I really like everyone in the play and it has just been a really fun experience.
Sands hasn’t had a problem fitting into the acting group during this play. With the help of his brother and cast he has been very successful throughout this process.
Freemole puts on two plays every year and Sands looks forward to the next one. He stated, “I like it a lot. Although it is very hard and tiring I really look forward to plays coming up in the future.”
