Alumni game raises funds for basketball team

On Saturday, the Greeley West basketball team held its third annual Alumni Tournament. Head coach Brett Cloephil puts on the event.

The Tournament is a fundraiser for the basketball team. The money is used to help pay for the summer season.

The first round of the tournament started at 9 a.m. and the championship was held at 4 p.m. Cloephil  sets up the teams by the year the alumni graduated. There was alumni at the tournament all the way from the 1980s all the way to a graduate of 2016.

The tournament was won by the 2006-2008 team. This team had notable alum Neal Kingman. Kingman was one of the few Division 1 athletes at the event. Kingman was a part of the 2011 University of Northern Colorado team who qualified for the NCAA March Madness Tournament.

Other notable alumni at the event included Mike Higgins. Higgins graduated from West in the early 80s and played four years of D1 basketball at the University of Northern Colorado. He later went on to play in the NBA. and then finished his professional career overseas.

The tournament also included many Greeley West staff members. Math teacher Brandon Torrez, Dean of Students Brian Holmes, former girls soccer coach Mike Lordemann and even head basketball coach Cloephil.

The Spartans Varsity basketball team helped run the tournament. They did everything from running the clock to taking money at the door. Sophomore Hunter Miller stated, “It was cool to see these alumni who have gone through the same steps we have and eventually we will be where they are. “
