Last Thursday, the Greeley West football team played against Longmont High School. The game started at 6:30 p.m. To start off the game Greeley West kicked the ball and Longmont returned the ball and scored a touchdown in 18 seconds.

Things only got worse, after the first six minutes, Longmont was up 14-0.

Then, momentum changed. Later in the first quarter on Longmont’s third play, sophomore Carter Bruning, intercepted and shifted the momentum to Greeley West. “I was just looking to make a big play for my team,” Bruning stated.

After Bruning’s interception, junior Derek West, scored his first touchdown of the night. In the second quarter, junior Joseph Piacenza, had a touchdown catch. This tied the game at halftime with the score 14-14.

In the third quarter, junior Dorrean Starks, ran the ball in for a touchdown making the score 20-20. A reverse play allowed West to score a 84 yard touchdown to end the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter Longmont punted the ball. “We came in thinking we were the underdogs and the team just needed me to run the ball as hard as I could. So I came in and did my thing for my team.” West stated.

In a controversial call, West scored a touchdown running 85 yards.

With two minutes left in the fourth quarter, the stadium was evacuated due to a gas leakage. The game was called with the ending score of 34-20.

After seven years, Greeley West has finally broken the losing streak against Longmont.

In the week prior, the football team beat local rivals Roosevelt, making their record 2-0.
