In the spirit of Halloween, the FFA students decided to get in some community service to help spread joy. Eight FFA officers and plenty of Ag students participated in this activity.

The students decorated over 60 pumpkins. The designs were painted on and varied from spooky skulls to school spirit. Students volunteered their personal time during lunch and after school to decorate the elaborate pumpkins. Mr. Kelly Longacre used the FFA funds to purchase the pumpkins from a local farm called Teque Farms.

The community service aspect is that the students distributed the pumpkins on Thursday October 19, to elderly people in an assisted care home. Ashley Dhooge, a junior FFA officer said that the hope of the project was to, “spread the spirit to a place, and to people who might not get too into the holiday.”

The project was an excellent way to bring together students of all grades to help with something bigger than themselves. Officers who are upperclassmen were able to collaborate with underclassmen just joining the FFA program. Although only the officers distributed the pumpkins, younger students helped decorate. Freshman Trace Hurley said it was “a great experience to help someone other than people at our own school.”
