On Sunday November 5, multiple water mains broke in Greeley. One of the places where the water main broke was at Meeker Elementary School. The water from it flooded the school that night leaving it with floor and walls destroyed and muddy water in almost every room.

Due to the damage, students did not have to attend school most of the week. That Thursday morning, kindergarten through fourth grade reported to Greeley Generations Church just right next door to West. Fifth graders and the IFL special education program remained at Meeker outside in the portables.

District 6 has offered transportation help for the students to get over to the church. Three buses are available to shuttle students over to the church starting at 7:35 a.m. until all students are transported to the church. Then after school, students will be transported on the buses from the church back to Meeker at 3:10 p.m.

Sarah Ortega, a mother of a kindergarten student and a 3rd grader said she’s happy to have the shuttle system in place, “It’s a very frustrating situation, but knowing (the district) takes them to the church every day with West traffic (is better).”

Meeker will be at the church for three to five weeks while construction for the repairs are being done.

While at the church, students will use West’s facilities for recess. Greeley West principal Mr. Jeff Cranson got a phone call asking if they could use the fields, and he agreed, offering any help he could give.
