Over the weekend with the snowstorm and freezing temperatures, a water pipe embedded in the concrete below the school broke, causing flooding and damage to the choir room. The water was found early on Tuesday morning when the room was opened to turn on the lights.

The leak was slow, only causing a few inches of water to spread into the lower level of the amphitheater like structure. The early classes helped to move the string instruments out of the back room, but the piano was too heavy and bulky to risk moving out without the help of a professional. One was hired to move it and minimal damage was sustained to it. Aside from the humidity messing with tuning, the piano should be fine.

The total cost for repairing the room is unknown at this time; there are many factors to consider. It is likely that the room will need new carpet, along with the other services and people who are here to fix the problem. Students could be displaced from the classes that take place in the room (primarily choir and orchestra) for the next few days.  It is hoped that the damage was not extensive enough to move them for much longer.

No other parts of the school are at risk for flooding or damaged. With the heat from the school mixed with the cold air outside has left the school feeling more humid than usual, especially in the hallway and commons right beside the room itself. Principal Mr. Jeff Cranson released a statement saying that the heat needed to be shut off in the building around 10:00 AM in order to fix the leak itself. The heat was scheduled to turn on again once the leak was fixed, which was done by 11:30 AM.

“I guess, we should keep hoping for a new building,” Cranson joked when asked about the damage.
