West TAs find fun in helping out where they can

Greeley West students looking to have a lot of free time while getting credit should look no further than being a teacher’s assistant. While TAs spend some of their time working, most of the time, they sit around on their phones and work on other homework.
One of the busiest TA jobs in the school is that of being an office assistant. These students help the staff with calling students down to the office with a pass, giving tours to guests, and answering phone calls during busy times of the day.
Students take on this responsibility because it counts as a class just like another class where they have to do homework. Teachers Greeley West enjoy having TAs to help them grade papers and work with students.
One of the places that TAs come in most handy is in the Future Center. Mitch Staut, one of the Gear Up advisers, said that TAs are integral to the learning in his corner of the school. “TAs organize a lot of our stuff. They make sure all of the computers are working and that it is a safe environment for everybody,” Staut said.
The Future Center has multiple TAs per hour, who also have opportunities to do their own homework. “On Fridays, our TAs help with Financial Fridays and walk around and help our students making sure they’re getting theirs FAFSA done,” Staut said.
Many students would prefer not to have a TA and would like to just have the off block so that they can have free time and do fun things or do homework. But even though students are in a TA class, they can still do all of these things while getting credit.
Demitri Jaramillo, who is the sixth period office TA, said, “The benefit of being a teacher assistant is helping your teachers and when you done helping teachers out you can do your homework and other work that you had to do.”
A big part of Jaramillo’s allure to the job was the laid back nature. “When you have have free time and it’s kind of an off block, but it counts as a class so you get credit for it and it’s an easy class and it helps for your grade point average,” Jaramillo added.
