Cell phone usage during pledge just shows disrespect
February 22, 2022
Over the past three years of high school, I’ve seen less and less of the students here stand up for the Pledge of Allegiance and I believe it happens at the other schools as well. Every year there are fewer and fewer kids standing up for the Pledge of Allegiance.
I don’t believe it’s a problem to the school but it has got to a point where it seems as if we forgot the meaning of the Pedge. Kids rather have chosen to sit and be on their phones while it’s being announced on the intercom. There is no problem with kids not standing up because it’s their own free will to do what they would like. Sitting down is understandable, but kids being on their phone while being announced kind of seems like a sign of disrespect.
Some people don’t stand for the Pledge because of current events and political beliefs. But there is no reason for kids to be on their phones. What would it do if they just put it down for that two minutes of listening to the Pledge of Allegiance? It doesn’t hurt if you choose to sit or stand while listening. Being on your phones can show a sign of disrespect to some people who have lost family members or family that’s in the army, as well as being on the phones can show as if we lost sight of the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance means.
The meaning behind it is showing respect to the flag and as well as the people who have fought for the flag. Being on your phone just shows that you don’t care – that it means nothing. So just taking those few minutes to sit quietly or stand quietly won’t do you any harm by any means.
