West, Central soccer teams looking for first league win of season tomorrow night
September 27, 2022
The Greeley West boys soccer team will look to reverse the unfortunate outcome of their game against Windsor on Monday, when they were defeated by the Wizards, 2-0. The Spartans will have all the motivation in the world Wednesday because they’re hosting cross-town rival Greeley Central..
This game is the last rivalry game for six seniors who want to go out with a bang and defeat the Wildcats. Senior midfielder Luis “Tito” Salcido said he’s been looking forward to this all season long. “ is really important to them. “It’s my last year to prove West is better than Central, to show out and show who’s best,” Salcido said.
For senior center back Austin Jones, making sure his teammates are geared for the game is essential. “I expect the best out of everyone playing and I expect that W,” Jones said.
The Wildcats enter the game with a record of 5-5. They most recently lost to Mead, 5-0. The Wildcats are led by senior Christian Guzman who leads the conference in goals with 11. The Spartans are 4-6 overall and are led by junior Juan Cortes, who has found the back of the net 6 times this season.
The game might just determine who finishes in last place in the 5A/4A Northern Conference standings, as both teams enter winless..
While the seniors are focused on the history and tradition of the game, freshmen players are experiencing the rivalry for the first time. Freshman midfielder Emmanuel Silva doesn’t want to let his senior teammates down. ““I’ve been excited and nervous since i’m a freshman, but i’ve been watching this game since 7th grade. Now I finally get the chance to play in it,” Silva said.
The team has asked for the student body to participate and go watch the game tomorrow night. Jones said, With that home crowd, we want everyone to come out and show out, get our ego and spirit lifted. So we as a team get some good energy going.”
