The Greeley West Spartan Football team looks to start the season off right tonight at home against Mountain Range.
In last year’s game against Mountain Range West defeated the Mustangs, 23-7, which was one of the Spartans’ two wins last year. Both teams ended up with a sub .500 record last year, the Spartans going 2-8 and the Mustangs going 3-7. The Spartans hope to bounce back from last year’s disappointments.
“I think this year we need to come out a little bit stronger. They underestimated us last year due to our record from the year before and I feel like they know what to expect and I hope to catch them by surprise,” team captain David Lopez said.
Quarterback Julian Salas threw a total of 96 yards and had one rushing touchdown last year. Jose Salas was the leading rusher with 115 rushing yards and 38 receiving yards for a total of 153 yards, scoring a touchdown. On the defensive end Greeley West had three fumble recoveries from players, Jermaine Amaya, Cole Nohr and Ricardo Castillo. West also had 7.5 sacks for a total of five defensive turnovers. Tyler Vail expressed his hopes for tomorrow’s game.
“I hope to apply better technique and speed was my biggest improvement since last year’s game and hope to apply it when we play them,” Vail said.
The team hopes to have a better outing against Mountain Range this go around than they did last year. “We definitely need to play deeper on defense. I play a different position then last year and now I gott to make sure I continue to defend outside and get some interceptions or some sacks,” junior captain Richie Santilan said.
