The Greeley West boys soccer team lost its first league game to Holy Family, 3-1, on Wednesday.
After coming out hot scoring the first goal of the match in the first half, the Spartans didn’t score the rest of the game, allowing three unanswered goals in the second half. Head coach Jorge Cabral voiced his thoughts on how the game is going to affect the team in the long run. “So something I discussed with the players is, ‘Hey if we want a chance at playoffs, we need to play the whole 80 minutes.’ So I think the team understood and felt that message, so I think that this game is a great learning process for the next games,” Cabral said.
The Spartans have had a rough year so far posting a record of 2-7 after losing against the Tigers. Additionally, the team has only scored 11 goals this season with seven of those goals coming in the two games in which they have won.
Holy Family has also had a rough year, going 0-6-1 coming into Wednesday’s game. Senior Rodolfo Rodriquez expressed what the team’s mindset was going into the game against Holy Family and how it was different after the game. “At the beginning, we were hyped to win the game in the first half, but in the second half, we lost it and lost our mindset. After the game, we were feeling down, but we thought that we played well other than our energy in the second half,” Rodriquez said.
The Spartans have a tough schedule, with their next game being another league game against the 5-2-1 Windsor Wizards on Monday. Junior midfielder Diego Vazquez expressed how he thinks the loss to Holy Family will motivate the team going into the game against Windsor.
“I think that we saw our flaws. We played well, but we could always push to do better and to go one hundred percent the whole game. In the second half, we started sloppy. So in the Windsor game, we are going to try and go one hundred percent in both halves because we played an amazing first half,” Vasquez said.
