More kids mean more exchange students; meet junior Rasmus Birnbaum.
Birnbaum comes from Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and like with any exchange student, it takes a while to get used to living here. He’s still getting used to the long school hours here because in Germany school would end around 1:30, compared to here where school ends at 3:40, which results in less free time for him.
He is also getting used to the school lunch, as he already got pretty tired of eating pizza and burgers. “In Germany, we don’t have long of school, so we get out at 1:30 so we have a little bit more free time,” Birnbaum said
Birnbaum has found a way of still getting involved in school, as he plays soccer for Greeley West. Birnbaum likes the fact that you are able to play sports for your school and that they take it seriously. It would make perfect sense he would play soccer considering it’s a big sport in Germany. “ I like that you can play for your school. I like that they take sports seriously,” Birnbaum said
He isn’t alone on this journey as he lives with the other exchange student Saverio Merlino. Although they are from different countries, he likes it, as they both share the same struggles and problems, so he has someone he can relate to and talk to. Both are on a learning journey and they can learn from each other. “It’s good, we both have the same problems, we might be different but its good to have someone who shares the same struggle,” Birnbaum said.
