Throughout the school year, you rarely see school spirit until West-Central week comes along. Sure everyone enjoys the week – that’s why there’s so much school spirit around. However, Student Council works hard throughout the school year to try to get everyone’s spirit and involvement up It’s time the student body started taking advantage of that.
Some people say that Greeley West has a lot of school spirit. The truth is over the years the school spirit has gone down. When you go to football games that aren’t rival games, you don’t see as many people. When you go to any other sports games that aren’t football ,there aren’t a lot of numbers that attend there either.
Another issue is that as the years go on each freshman grade level you see less and less spirit. The question is, what has changed over the years? The answer to that question isn’t the school, but the students. You always see the teachers dress up for spirit week, but never the students. This year over the assemblies you see people over all grade levels not knowing their chant or even other chants. I think it’s sad that over the years the spirit stick disappears more and more and that’s because we don’t have spirit.
Student Council works hard to sponsor events for all sorts of different things around the school, but most students don’t recognize that and then the outcomes don’t turn out well. Why aren’t we celebrating everything else the school has to offer?
You don’t always see a lot of people attending other sporting events. We have a really good softball team this year – better than any other sport has been – but you never see anyone attending those games. Only the football games are well attended. It’s time to think about that and maybe we’ll see a change in our school spirit by the end of the year.
