The Greeley West soccer team fell to Mead, 3-0, on Wednesday night, as the the Spartans celebrated senior night.
The night started off extremely slow as neither team’s defense would give up. West’s goalkeeper stopped the few shots Mead had on target. After a hard-fought defensive battle through the first half, the score stood 0-0 at the end of the first half.
The second half started off slow once again, but Mead was slowly putting pressure on West’s defense.
Around 15 minutes into the second half Mead powered a shot toward goal that was stopped by the goalie, but the ball bounced into play, allowing Mead to get a second chance shot, and shoot it into goal to open the night’s scoring.
Not too long after, West had a golden opportunity when junior Kevin Quiniones shot a beauty toward goal that looked like it was curving down into the goal. Unfortunately for the Spartans Quinones’ show hit off the crossbar, narrowly missing the goal.
Shortly after, Mead extended the lead to two when one of their players won a one-on-one with the Spartans goalie.
The Spartans pushed into Mead territory, and the Spartans ended up winning a free kick near midfield. Captain Juan Cortes crossed the ball into the box. The ball ended up taking many bounces, and what looked to be West’s first goal of the night ended up in a shot that was deflected off of one of the defender’s legs, a few feet away from the net.
Mead iced the game after one of their forwards had a one-on-one chance, and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner of the net.
After the game West celebrated the High School careers of their senior players, including both of their team captains.
