Students throughout the years at Greeley West have seen a trend go in and out: people wearing letterman jackets. There appears to be a resurgence in letterman jackets recently. They are a representation of the school.
Sophomore Cody Gesick lettered his freshman year for both sports and academics. “I got a letterman because I lettered in cross country. I also thought it was cool to have,” Gesick said.
Juniors Makai Mireles and Nick Tijerina also both lettered their freshman year. “I bought one because it represents high school sports,” Tijerina said. “It’s a symbol of excellence when you get your letterman jacket and you feel like everyone else sees it and says ‘I’ll get there one day’,” Mireles said.
Senior Akam Chahal lettered in both academics and swimming her freshman year. “I bought one my sophomore year because I had one from swimming and academics and then I also had some state patches so I just thought I would get one,” Chahal said.
Proving that letterman popularity has been cyclical are GWHS graduates who teach here now.
Mr. Ryan Pace is a science teacher here at West, he also graduated from here in 2006 and lettere in both categories but didn’t purchase a letterman. “I didn’t get a letterman because it wasn’t my thing, they were phases throughout high school of when people wore them and I think it’s a trend now to wear them,” Pace said. “It represents school pride and if everyone is wearing them, it means you earned an accomplishment here,” Pace said.
Ms. Izbeth Pacheco graduated here in 2016 and lettered in academics but didn’t purchase one either. “I think it’s cool of the students who own one. It’s good to have pride and work ethic, but I also think it’s cooler if students have both letters though,” Pacheco said.
