The Greeley West’s Mexican American Studies class and club are coming together for their annual Dia de los Muertos celebration at the University of Northern Colorado. This year, students have decided to honor Greeley West students Joey Aleman and William Kitchell – both of whom passed away in the past year – in their altar.
Greeley community members participate in this celebration by creating an altar to dedicate and honor lost loved ones. The altars have been showcased since October 27 and will remain viewable at UNC in the Campus Community Commons through November 3. Along with the altars, there is an official celebration on November 2nd from 5-7 p.m. Greeley West students are welcome to come and celebrate with music, food, and a great community.
Mexican American Studies sponsor Ms. Izabeth Pacheco is excited to keep this tradition going and embrace a community of students who are passionate about their culture. “UNC students, community members, and middle and high schools all come together to present the meanings behind Dia de los Muertos with a celebration full of honor and dedication,” Pacheco shared.
Mexican American Studies student and club member Ethan Villeda, believes that when a celebration like this happens, it allows for a community where culture is embraced. “It’s important for our community to celebrate Dia de los Muertos because a large part of our community has grown up celebrating it. This event allows people with like cultures to come together and embrace who they are,” Villeda stated.
Villeda also believes that it’s important to welcome others to come and learn about their peers’ cultures and celebrations. “It’s nice to recognize diversity. It builds a stronger sense of inclusivity and connection,” Villeda shared.
With all this said, Pacheco hopes that Greeley West students are excited to come out and celebrate this year’s Dia de los Muertos. “It would be really cool if a lot of West students go and support this event,” Pacheco stated.
