The Greeley West FFA chapter traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana last week on a road trip that was as educational as it was fun.
This competition is a really big deal for the contestants. The trip helps students expand and make connections in a national agricultural community. But it’s not all about competing, giving speeches and making connections. While the students were on their way to the competition, they made several stops along the way.
This year, some of those sites included the Natural Falls Park in Colocord, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, Arkansas State University, a cotton farm and the Grand Ol’ Opry.
FFA members agreed that the Brewster Farm in Clearwater, Kansas, which focuses on raising cotton was a highlight of the trip. Also a favorite was the Oklahoma State University tour.
Junior Kaitlyn Fenton enjoyed learning about different farming styles. She said, “My favorite site was probably the farm since the agriculture is different in Kansas. They have to take different procedures to maintain the farm.”
There are two kinds of learning – learning by doing and learning by sitting in a classroom. Senior Aidan Datteri preferred the college tour. “I definitely like the Oklahoma State University tour. The campus was huge, but it was super historical and pretty to see.”
Not only is going to nationals fun, and exciting for the members, but it also holds a lot of value. Having national events for FFA goes to show and prove to others in the local community that the Agriculture Department and FFA community are much bigger than, Greeley and the state, and hold many opportunities and experiences for all who attend.
The Ag teachers have looked forward to and prepared for the trip since June. Classtime is used to prepare for the competition, as well as outside of class time. It’s also important for them to make sure everything is organized and goes accordingly.
During this planning time, the ag teachers prepare themselves as well as the participants, for this exciting event. The teams will work and prepare their speeches, while the teachers will schedule tours and drive the students to the event.
