In their third season, the Greeley West E-sports team continues their dominance from last season posting a record of 6-2 and are ranked 11th in Colorado for Rocket League. The Spartans had their last match against Rocky Mountain yesterday winning in five matches, 3-2.
After making the round of 16 last year and losing to championship-bound Cherry Creek, head coach Joel Suarez expresses his team’s goals in the playoff this year. “In terms of playoffs, I think that we can make it to the Top 8. We have never actually made it to State, so one of our goals is to make it to top 8 to be able to go down to Denver for the State competition,” Suarez said.
Suarez then stated what the team needs to do in order to make a run in the playoffs. “To get past where we’ve gotten to before in the past is just to work on our communication. So just working on that communication when there’s a play happening in the game is actually able to communicate,” Suarez said.
Coach Suarez offered insight on what happened this year in order to make it to the playoffs. “Austin Burns is really really good. He is more of a coach than I am. He is the man; he knows all the moves. So I leave all of the things in his hands, like who he thinks should play, starters for this match. They do a really good job scouting other teams as well,” Suarez said.
With the win against Rocky Mountain, Suarez explained how this match will help them as they go to the playoffs. “So one cool thing about our match with Rocky Mountain is we’ve played them before in the past and every single time we played them, we’ve lost. This is the first time we’ve actually played this team and actually won against them. So the fact that we actually beat them… let us actually see what we’re up against in the playoffs,” Suarez said.
