The Greeley West Girls basketball team is gearing up for their first game of the season tonight against Overland.
Last year, the team struggled with a record of 1-22, with their last win coming against Northglenn on December 6th. They faced challenges on both the defensive and offensive sides of the court, averaging 29 turnovers and 18 points per game while allowing 56 points per game. Head Coach Johnathan Bass expressed his thoughts on what the team needs to do in order to improve from last season after losing last year against Overland 53-32.
“This is the first time in two seasons where we really are focused on the varsity team and what they can contribute.WE must give our best effort, always. WE must have our full concentration while on the court in practice and games. WE must also be selfless teammates,” Bass explained.
Despite early adversity, Bass remains optimistic about the upcoming season. “We are not going to be a successful team in regards to wins and losses. We will not be a 20-2 team playing in the Final Four this year. That is not our team. But I do truly believe that we will be a better team on and off the court this year and we’ll do some things that all players and coaches, staff and students will be proud of when the season ends,” Bass said.
Bass has goals for what he thinks the team can do this season and like all teams on opening night, he’s dreaing big. But he also stays realistic and that small changes on a more regular basis will be they key this season. “Well, I always have a goal of making the state tournament every season. It is a challenging goal as only 32 teams make it in 5A, but I still feel it needs to be out there. I also have a goal that we do the best we can each and every night,” Bass said.
