It’s time to address the elephant in the room for Mexican soccer fans: stop going to the soccer games. Ever since their disappointing run in the 2022 World Cup, the Mexican National Team has been on a rapid decline in results.
Who is this going towards? Fans who are still stuck on the “good ol’ days” that the national team had, or those that have no other real connection to their heritage. Yes it’s nice to see the professionals who represent the country play once in a while, but with how mediocre the team it’s been and how under-achieved the team has been recently.
After not making it out of the group stage during the World Cup, they have since gone two games losing to the U.S. Mens National Team and haven’t beaten the USMNT since September of 2019, four whole years ago. The sad part is that the game wasn’t even a competitive game but it was a friendly match.
The reasoning behind these poor performances is argued to be the hunger for money that federation presidents have. It’s true that the federation doesn’t care about the results, but they care about the sponsorships and money that they’re milking off the team.
A good example of this is keeping players that are old and way past their prime players like; Guillermo (Memo) Ochoa, Raul Jimenez, and Jesus Gallardo. The federation also spends its time and roster spots calling up player who are not necessarily good, but they generate a lot of revenue with jersey sales. Notable players with these call ups are; Hirving Lozano, Jorge Sanchez, and Sebastian Cordova.
Players like Memo are still used because of the popularity and favoritism that the fanbase has towards them. Don’t get me wrong Memo might be the best goalkeeper Mexico has right now but he’s 38 years old and the federation can’t keep chasing paychecks much longer with him. The fans themselves have caught on to this power play of the federation and have demanded that they let the coach start experimenting with the younger generation that is advancing through the youth levels.
What other way to get the greedy presidents to finally pay attention to the cries of the fans? It has to be by the pockets. It’s time to step away from the games and from buying their jerseys, although they are beautiful. A protest was already held in a 3rd place Gold Cup match, where Mexico played Panama in a 3rd place match. At the time of kick off, there were only 4,000 fans in attendance, and this was only one instance where such a protest was scheduled. If many more of these protests were started then it could lead to a change in the Mexican National Team Federation.
So again, Mexico fans, stop going to the games and giving the federation money, because that’s really what they want from you.
