On Friday, Greeley West hosted Alexandra Lehnert, a Colorado News 4 meteorologist. Lehnert came for an assembly to share her personal story with honor roll students, and the video production, yearbook and newspaper classes.
Lehnert is a former Greeley West student. She was involved in West’s swim team with Mr. Colin Shaha as her coach. She was involved in the IB program and graduated in 2002. After high school, she went abroad to Italy for two years and loved it. She went to college to get her license in meteorology.
Lehnert said, “I never liked science and math and I never would have thought I would be choosing a career that handles science and math every single day.”
Lehnert further explained how her career brought her to where she is today. She first started out in Casper Wyoming, then moved to California for a bit before finally settling here in the Denver area last October.
The assembly gave the students in video production bigger picture to their class. Lehnert explained that her career deals with both jounralism and video production heavily, and gave advice to the students. She talked about when to zoom in and how to get shots of subjects in video production.
Honor Roll junior Dathan Nicholes explained how cool it was to learn about Lehnert. “I think its pretty cool that a former West graduate became someone famous and was able to share with us about her story and how she became who she is now,” Nicholes said.
Lehnert explained that her job involves many things and she has to cover some unsettling things. Lehnert explained one of her worst days on the job. “There was one time that we had gotten a call about a body in an alley, and sure enough there it was. That was hard and there are times like this all the time, and its hard to interview the families of a loved one, and having to go and report it to national television,” Lehnert explained.
Lehnert’s visit to West was a way for students to see that they may not know what they want to be right now, and to show that if you have a passion for something go for it.
