On Monday, January 24, Greeley West’s Student Council held elections for the positions of president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, communications director, and sergeant of arms at its annual Executive Board elections. These elections are like a democracy where people apply for the position, write a speech, and present it to the student council board, and then the council takes a vote. “The process of student council elections is unique. We elect an executive board in January, then general elections in February,” said Ms. Lea Sanford, one of the student council advisers.
Senior Zanayah Shanks, who is the current student council president, was present for the elections on Monday. She explained the election process. During elections, students speak on behalf of the people who are trying to run for the executive board, which helps change people’s minds. But elections are more of a class vote, where everyone has to vote. “I think definitely speaking on behalf of the people that are trying to run for exec board I think it helps change people’s mind,” Shanks said.
Sophomore Cody Gesick, current sophomore class representative, ran for communication liaison and won. This role is bigger compared to just a class representative. As a class representative, he helps host assemblies. Now as a communication liaison, his role in STUCO will change. “Next year I will be the communication liaison which is meant to contact in-school organizations and share that information with stuco so they know what’s going on in the school,” Gesick said.
