As Greeley West’s said their final goodbyes to their former Student Resource Officer Mark Harrahill, new SRO Cyvel Diaz was already meeting students and learning the hallways.
Diaz will be West’s SRO for the next five years. Diaz has worked for the Greeley Police Department for six years. “ I am excited to be Greeley West’s SRO and I am looking forward to being able to get to know students and becoming a resource for them,” Diaz said.
Being an SRO is not as easy as it may seem. As an SRO at West, you are surrounded by students all of the time and sometimes put into tough decisions in regards to punishments. When asked how Diaz prepared herself she joked, “I watched Mean Girls about five times to prepare for the role.”
This is Diaz’s first time being an SRO in any school but has a lot of knowledge and experience around the city. Diaz has been on night patrol for most of her career. Diaz is also on the crisis negotiations team, the peer support team, and does polygraphs for the police department.
Diaz has been in the police force for an extended period of time but is excited to get back to working with kids. “Working with kids in my community has always been something that I have wanted to do. It is an honor to help in keeping the Greeley West community safe,” Diaz said.
Although Diaz was very excited to be offered the job at West, she is also nervous. She is not nervous about the big responsibilities that come with working in a high school setting, however. “I heard that playing basketball is a must for being an SRO at West… I’m not good at basketball,” Diaz said.
