Greeley West High School students’ information is now recorded upon entering the bathrooms. Students are required to scan their school IDs, which log their student information into a computer as a new safety precaution.
Many students don’t understand why the bathrooms are more restricted. Administrators and campus monitors believe this is the best way to keep students safe.
Vaping and vandalism have been a frequent issue inside school bathrooms. “We have gotten an incredible amount of damage to the restrooms through vandalism. We have also received a lot of students and parents who have expressed frustration about vaping. Students want to use the bathroom without people smoking in them,” Assistant Principal Amanda Jones shared.
Students believe these precautions to be redundant. “I just think it’s unnecessary. I understand the importance of safety, but having everyone having to scan their ID every single time gets time-consuming. Some students can even become late to their classes when trying to use the restroom during passing periods,” sophomore Delylah Ruiz shared.
Campus Monitors believe this is a great safety precaution to make sure the bathrooms aren’t being vandalized. “When we scan your IDs, we aren’t tracking you. It’s just to make sure that if anything happens in the bathroom we have the students and the times of when they used the restroom,” campus monitor Rose Francis explained.
School administrators don’t want these safety precautions to feel restricted. “We don’t want to tell kids whether or not they can use the bathroom. We just want to make sure the bathrooms are being taken care of. If there are any solutions that students have we are more than willing to hear them. We want to treat students like adults and with respect and we’re just not getting that in return. So if there are any solutions please contact us,” Jones shared.

Can there be a bathroom monitors instead. I do not agree with the scanning of ids to use the bathroom. Will my child be at fault if something happens while they are in The bathroom and someone else is vandalizing it or vaping? I feel a actual person monitoring the bathrooms would be a better deterrent for bad behavior than just scanning ID’s
