The Greeley West thespians bring their own spin on Mean Girls for this year’s spring musical. There are four showings: Friday, March 1, Saturday, March 2, Friday, March 8, and Saturday, March 9, all starting at 7:30 p.m.
Greeley West thespians like to perform the newest and hottest things and with the new Mean Girls movie and the Broadway tour, it’s a great time for West to perform an iconic show.
Director Ms. Peggy Freemole was concerned about the content at first, but eventually decided it was a story that needed to be told. “I was apprehensive at first because it deals with some intense subject matter such as issues surrounding cliques, bullying, and many social media issues that go on in high school today. As I did a little more research, I found this was a story that needed to be told. Tina Fey (writer of the Mean Girls musical) has said that she felt that if we expressed these issues in a humorous way we could understand them better, so we can stop doing them,” Freemole explained.
Greeley West thespians believe people should come to the show for not only the great story but for the message behind it. “This is an iconic piece in pop culture, but the musical’s message remains the same. It really portrays a great message on how we should and should not be treating people. It highlights how we all have flaws and instead of tearing each other down for that, we should be supporting people and using it as a device for growth,” senior Maddie Zeller shared.
Thespian students believe they worked extremely hard on the show and have done a great job considering how many new actors they have. “We have put so much work and time into the show. I’m particularly really proud of the people who are dancing that are not trained dancers. The choreography that we’re putting on stage is really difficult and these non dancers have done a really great job with that,” junior Kennedy Ader explained.
Freemole hopes the audience will enjoy the show. “There’s really great music. It’s funny; there’s really beautiful singing, there’s fun costumes from the early 2000’s, and it’s just really fun. I’m really hoping that people come out and see it,” Freemole shared.
