The Spartan Baseball team had a rough outing yesterday as they lost to the Northridge Grizzlies, 13-1.
The Spartans struggled out the gate, giving up two runs in the first inning after a strike called a ball extended the inning. Then a single to left field with bases loaded was only the beginning of the end for the Spartans.
The Spartans then promptly gave up three runs in the third inning, three in the fifth, two in the sixth, three in the 7th, with the Spartans only run coming in the fourth inning after a David Lavato triple and Ethan Guest ground out to drive the run in.
It’s no secret the Spartans struggled on the mound, but they also hit four batters, hitting one of them twice. On the other hand they struck out nine batters through the seven innings. Offensively they struck out nine times and left five runners on.
Jacob Flores explained what went wrong for the Spartans against Northridge. “We just didn’t hit. We were not swinging at pitches in the zone and we were watching too many first pitch strikes. We need to have better approaches at the plate and work our counts,: Flores stated.
It’s only uphill for the Spartans after the loss. They play undefeated Windsor tomorrow at 11a.m.
Ethan Guest explained what the team needs to do to bounce back against Windsor. “We gotta play to our full potential. We can’t play down to a different team’s level. Yeah. We gotta play to like how we know how to play. Just do our best,” Guest explained.
Flores explained what the team needs to do to improve offensively and defensively against Windsor. “Defensively we need to communicate more and trust our team, make the plays we know we can make, and back up our pitchers,” Flores explained. “Offensively we need to take batting practices more serious and take full advantage of the time we have when hitting”
