After coming away with a dominant 6-0 victory against Roosevelt, the Greeley West girls soccer team faced off against Moutain View on Thursday. The Lions came out of the match with a 2-0 win dropping West’s record to 1-1.
The game started with the Spartans maintaining good midfield composure until around the 22nd minute of the first half. A Mountain View player intercepted a pass and took a shot from outside of the box that ended well-placed and over West’s goalkeeper Hayden Atchley. After the goal, the Spartans seemed to be shaken up and struggled to make any offensive plays happen the rest of the half.
As the second half of the game started, the Spartans came out equally as shaky and nearly the whole half was spent on West’s defending half of the field. An error inside the Spartan’s box led to Mountain View’s second goal.
After having nearly the whole game played in their defensive half, the defense did everything in their power to not allow any more goals throughout the game. Senior center back and captain Caroline Karr admits that the team went into very confident after their last game. “After winning against Roosevelt, we saw that Mountain View was just coming off a loss against Loveland. We were feeling pretty confident,” Karr explained. “Clearly when it comes to entering a game, we have to let our game show the talk and Mountain View did just that which led to the defeat.”
Apart from being physically strong and quick, the defense stayed sharp the whole game by moving together as a unit. “A huge advantage we have is that we’re able to cover each other effectively,” Karr shared. “If one of our fullbacks move up we slide into position quickly and adapt to make sure we keep a strong defensive position.”
With the team having strong hopes to get back to their winning ways, the Spartans are looking forward to keep putting the work in during training as they prepare for their next matchup against Overland on Saturday.
