The Greeley West baseball team heads to Pueblo over the next two days, playing Pueblo County and Pueblo South on Thursday in a double header and Pueblo Central and Pueblo Centennial on Friday.
The baseball team has been up and down all season. After starting their season with a dominating win over Gateway, they went on a seven game losing streak, getting mercy-ruled in five of the seven games. They ended their losing streak by winning the second game of a doubleheader against Central, 12-2.
Since then, they have gone 1-3, losing to Longmont twice and Silver Creek on Monday. Their win in that four game stretch was a 34-2 win over Thornton, where the offense scored four more runs than they had scored the entire season in 11 games.
The strongest opponent the team will face is Pueblo Count,y who have a 11-5 record and are ranked 35th in Colorado. Right fielder Jacob Flores explained what they need to do to come out with a win against Pueblo County in order to have a successful road trip. “We need to go into the game with a winning mindset. We’re going to face some tough teams out there and it will benefit us so much knowing and believing that we can win that game,” Flores explained.
After Pueblo County, in the next three games, their opponents have a combined record of 17-27, with the worst team out of the bunch being Pueblo Centennial with a 3-11 record. Flores explains what they need to accomplish on this trip to have a good rest of their season. “We need to win out. If we win these games, it will set the tone for the rest of the season. If we win out the rest of the season, we can maybe see some playoffs in the future.”
After the Pueblo trip, the Spartans have six more games, playing Mead twice, Centaurus twice, Skyview, and then end their season against Silver Creek.
