As the school year is ending, Greeley West is starting to see hallway behavior negatively rise. When students leave during “bathroom breaks” that’s usually when you see most kids walk around the hallways.
Hall monitor Ms. Rose Francis stated that towards the end of the year is when students’ bad behavior starts to rise. “Statistically, students’ behavior tends to get worse at the end of the whole school year, and in all my years in education it has proven so,” Francis stated.
As the hall monitors try their best to get everyone back to class there are always some who tend to get in trouble still. “Right now we’re just trying to keep as many people in class as possible. If they are wandering or at the vending machines, we try and get them back to class just to limit the amount of kids in the hallway which limits the amount of people in trouble,” Francis said.
As students get the opportunity to use their bathroom breaks as a chance to “wander around” that’s when they see the most kids out of class. “A lot of times when kids ask to go to the bathroom, most times kids aren’t actually asking to go to the bathroom. It’s either to stand there on their phone or meeting their friends, but bathroom breaks the kids ask for definitely affect the behavior,” Francis stated.
Principal Mr. Jeff Cranson has other concerns when it comes to passing period behavior, especially now that bells are shut off for the year due to AP/IB testing. “The thing we’re struggling with is how do we address this apathy to getting to class on time,” Cranson stated.
With so many students late to class it makes it harder for administration to consider student requests to have longer passing periods. “If passing periods are too short kids are going to be tardy, but if we make them longer will those same kids be tardy? Or will they be on time. Of course they are going to be late because they will take an extra minute,” Cranson stated.
