On Monday, Greeley West High School had its annual awards ceremony that recognized students for both their academic and athletic achievements. Throughout the night, there was a name that was familiar throughout the auditorium at Greeley West and that was Kaden Waugh.
Waugh is a current senior and is also a tri-sport athlete who participated in wrestling, football, and track. Waugh is also a part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Greeley West and is involved in many programs like theatre, FFA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), and National Honor Society (NHS). This involvement hasn’t gone unnoticed by the school and he was awarded seven different times.
During the ceremony, Waugh was called up to the stage to be awarded the following awards; Tri-sport athlete, Academic First Team All-State for wrestling, football, and track, History Student of the Year, Seal of Biliteracy, Male Athlete of the Year, and Greeley West’s prestigious Honor Crest. While he added these accolades to his resume, he was able to explain how he managed to stay consistent throughout these last four years. “The consistency these last four years has been set with me allowing myself to take the classes and activities that I’m passionate about,” Waugh shared. “It’s been an easy balance with sports as well because I’ve used sports as a way to take my mind off of school and didn’t stress about them as much. I put my focus on being a prime example of what a student-athlete should be.”
With these achievements there definitely has been some struggle. Waugh had to dedicate a vast majority of his day to Greeley West and he was able to share what a schedule would look like throughout his busiest moments of the year. “ I would wake up at 5:00 am to head to the gym and get a lift in, and then be at school around 7:15 for a meeting for FFA, FCA, or NHS. I’d then go through my regular school day and from 4:00-11:00 pm I’d be in the theatre for rehearsals” Waugh explains.
Although Waugh did win a good amount of awards, his brother Korbin was nominated for many of the same awards that Kaden had won. Kaden Waugh hinted that there has been a sibling rivalry between the two. “Ever since we started school, we have been trying to one-up each other in academics. So throughout our time together in school there definitely has been a big rivalry between us,” Kaden stated.
As the year comes to an end, Waugh has been a shining example of what it means to be a Spartan with his achievements and involvement at Greeley West.
