Greeley West High School kicked off its 2024-25 school year on Tuesday with an assembly that showed off new possibilities regarding school spirit.
In addition to the new dean being announced to the student body, West students were exposed to a new color guard, a new Spartan app, and a whole bunch of new teachers that couldn’t dance.
Other traditions remained intact – booing freshmen and class competitions.
Seniors might think their booing is all in good fun, but freshmen said they noticed it. Khristian Vazquez, a freshmen, said, “I didn’t really care, but I feel like everybody else felt bad.”
Another person who felt bad was Greeley West’s new dean and assistant principal Ms. Brianna Tanner. She was the only administrator who did not have a scooter for the introductions skit. Students should not think it was the other principals bullying her. Tanner said she forgot the scooter, but was having an easy time in her new role. “It’s a good transition, but since I’ve taught here for two years, it’s not much of a difference for me,” Tanner said.
Another new edition to the West assemblies this year was two girls waving flags with the band. Color guard made its return after many years being away from the school. One of the flag girls, Serena Paw said that band director Mr. Keaton Michel had been asking for volunteers throughout the summer. When nobody seemed interested for the first few weeks, she stepped up. “The marching band had a one-week camp and I started experimenting with flags,” Paw said.
She also said that if other students are interested in joining, they still can do it. “You can talk to the director about changing your schedule to marching band and just join,” Paw stated.
