Last Wednesday after school boys basketball coach Matt Marriott announced to his players that he would be resigning for the 2024-2025 season.
Marriott’s assistant coach, Matt Myer, will fill the position on an interim basis. The rest of the basketball staff will remain intact.
Unlike the last basketball coach, Marriott was very forward and sincere with the players as to why he was resigning, while making it clear that he hopes the best for the program and plans to attend future games.
“I think the program is in a good spot, but consistency is one of the most important things. The administration understanding that and allowing Myer and the other coaches to be able to stay in their roles will be a big benefit to West’s future success,” Marriott said.
Even though Marriott wasn’t with Greeley West for very long, the players appreciated his efforts to change the culture of the team and his commitment to their development.
Junior guard Wyatt Edwards said he understands how difficult it was for Marriott to give his full attention to the program when he didn’t live in Greeley and already had so much going on with his full time job and his own children. He also said he’s excited to keep working with the same staff. “I think Coach Myer and Coach Andre (Sepeda) are still a big part of our program and our school both, as coaches and when they attended West,” Edwards said. “I feel like we are more of a family and we are more connected with Myer and Andre as our coaches.”
Even if Edwards is still excited for the season, he said he will miss Marriott as well. “Coach (Marriott) was a good coach and he did a lot for the program, but it was hard for him to grow the family considering he didn’t live in Greeley, on top of all of his work stuff, which I think is one of the main reasons why he left,” Edwards said.
Greeley West atheltic director Mr. J.J. Behrens thoght the news was more unexpected than Edwards. “The news broke to me last week that Coach Marriott would not be coming back to us next season. It was a little bit of shock as I believe we were moving in the right direction with the program,” Behrens explained. “The good news is that Coach Myer is ready to take over. He’s very familiar with all the plays and players and from a talk I had with him, he sounds very excited. Not to mention, he’s a Greeley West grad, so there’s obviously some pride that comes with that.”
