With little worries and responsibilities during the summer, Greeley West students’ sleep schedules also follow a relaxed pattern. Without classes early in the morning, most students stay up late with activities like video games or other social outings. Subsequently, they wake up whenever their body wishes throughout the summer.
That pattern came to a screeching halt on the first day of school, as soon as that first bell rang. Some students say that they are “stuck in summer” as soon as they fall asleep. But are seniors able to manage this schedule change better than those just entering high school?
Some are doing better than others. “During the summer, I go to bed at about 12:30 to 1 in the morning,” said senior Makai Mireles.. “But either way I wake up at 6 a.m. every day. I don’t really have to adjust since I wake up at the same time every day.”
Another senior, Roberto Arellano, stated that he sleeps roughly the same amount no matter the time of year. He makes a point to put his phone down before bed so that he wakes up to go to the gym. “I sleep about the same number of hours, so it’s not much of a difference.”
On the freshman side of things, Eddy Villalobos-Villegas remarked, “In the summer I would sleep late and wake up late, but now I sleep early and wake up early.”
Villalobos-Villegas did admit his sleep patterns affect his day and that he is active during the day, as to get better sleep at night. “When I sleep more I’m in a better mood and I have more energy,” Villalobos-Villegas said.
