Greeley West students returned to school and found they were locked out of their own chromebooks because a new login identification process went into play in August. The system will hopefully keep technology safer and easier to access for students.
The process is simple. As students log into their devices – whether it is a computer, phone, or tablet – a QR code is required to access it. All District 6 technology will need that QR code, then students will select a series of pictures as a password.
Dean of Students, Ms. Brianna Tanner stated that the systems last year simply weren’t working and they needed to find a more efficient way to get students logged in. “There were a ton of passwords being forgotten last year so this made it much easier,” Tanner explained.
Students have had a mixed reaction to the new process. Senior Dominic Sandoval has expressed why he doesn’t like it. ¨Once you let your computer sit for more than a few minutes, it shuts down and you have to log into everything again which is really annoying. However, so far it’s kept me from forgetting or losing my ID, which is great since that was a pretty big problem for me last year,¨ Sandoval explained.
Greeley West’s teachers have also had some things to say about these QR codes. English teacher, Ms. Whitney Upshaw said it’s a learning curve for staff members. ¨In the long run, I think that it’ll take time for us to get used to, especially when it comes to providing tech support. But anything that helps to make computer use more secure is a good thing.¨
The admin team and staff have high hopes for this new process. Tanner believes this is something that could permanently stick. “Our hope is to find something that works, and hope this is it. This year we have had far more IDs being kept then ever before and things have been going great so far,” Tanner said.
