Greeley West senior Michael McCoy had an amazing summer experience through his paid internship at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
When the opportunity for a summer internship program was given to upcoming seniors, McCoy applied immediately, knowing that he wanted to learn more about the medical field. “I want to be a surgical oncologist; one of the reasons being because my best friend has cancer,” said McCoy.
During his internship, McCoy got to shadow surgeries, run vitals, interact with chemotherapy patients, and observe doctor-patient visits. While working a total of 150 hours this summer, he experienced very memorable moments. McCoy said, “During my internship I got to be in the OR and shadow ten surgeries… I want to become a surgeon so it was very cool to see every single part of that in depth and up close.”
McCoy gained new experiences and learned many new things. “I learned how important it is to advocate for yourself and to be kind to everybody,” McCoy said.
He participated in interesting and unfamiliar surgical things, such as watching so many surgeries, because he advocated for himself and expressed his passion and willingness to learn about this field. “I had to advocate for myself to go into surgeries and asked surgeons to teach me other things,” McCoy mentioned.
This internship left McCoy with a clear head regarding his goals for the future. “It made me more decisive about going into the medical field… I’m pretty much set on it,” said McCoy.
The summer internship program is an incredible opportunity for students to learn and acquire experience within a field they’re passionate about. “I 100% would recommend the internship program. I think everybody, who can, should apply to do it,” McCoy stated.
