On Saturday, the Greeley West Spartan football team finally got a win against Gateway Gators with a score of 34-8.
It was the first time the Spartans had won since October of last season, when they defeated Greeley Central, 10-7. It was also the first time in five years that West had dominated a game to that degree. Credit goes to the new coaches and the players who have started 2024-25 so positively.
Head coach Jakob Vargas said that he could see the turnaround before the game with how the Spartans had played in Week 1. “We’ve only played one, but I was impressed by how hard we played. I was impressed by the fight; we played a really good team. We went out and had a solid game plan, and they were just the better team that night, but we had a lot of good things that we did, and we could build on for the rest of the year,” Vargas explained.
Now, West turns its attention to Northidge, who embarrased the Spartans last year, 40-12. “Northridge is going to have our full attention. We know how important these cross-town games are so we’re going to do everything we can to put our team in a position to be successful.”
Senior Jermey Keener has learned some things about his team this year. “I learned that the team can do anything that they put their mind to,” Keener said. He referenced the Montrose game as proof: “We actually wanted to work our butts off against Montrose), and we did everything we had, and we fought good against one of the best teams in the state–despite the scoreboard–we improved in every single way.”
Friday night’s game is a Northridge home game.
