The Greeley West Film Club is making waves in the school with an innovative film watching club. A passionate group of high school students is thriving to grow a community where they watch any type of film and then explore the art of the cinema by focusing on themes and messages to better understand them.
The club will meet every Tuesday after school in room A-103. Social studies teacher and club sponsor Ms. Michelle Hillin was inspired to begin a film club because of her own love of film. “I studied film in college and love using film clips in my history classes,” Hillin explained. “I want to feel more inspired again to do that even more. I had some students that seemed interested and that’s how it got started.”
Hillin explained that the film club is about people coming together and socializing over movies. The students will watch a movie and then come together the next week to chat about it, eat popcorn, and show clips from the week’s previous movie.
Students will choose the type of films that they are interested in watching, doing one film per week. Hillin mentioned that they might try to do a theme each month. “We will probably try to do themes every now and then when we can, like in October we will probably do horror films,” Hillin said.
The Film Club hopes to inspire and change students’ views on different genres of film. “We are going to see what people are interested in so we will watch classics, horror and – I don’t know – certain directors. Just whatever sounds exciting and fun for people,” Hillin mentioned.
