The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a club that strengthens the religious faith of students and athletes alike and gives them a place to express it. Greeley West’s club includes all students, not just athletes.
FCA sponsor Mr. Cruz Rodriguez talked about the meaning of the club to him and students. “I know how important my faith is and that it’s important to some students as well. Being able to have that community is very important. (The club) deeply cares about teenagers and helping them make good decisions in their lives,” said Rodriguez.
The club has grown to be almost entirely student led, sophomore Elliot Leffler explained. “Last year Mr. Rodriguez ran everything. Now we have one student every week prepare their own lesson to teach us.”
Senior Madison Vella talked about the experience of having another student lead the meeting. “Last time, we had Sam (Marceleno) lead the meeting where he spoke about lessons taught in the Bible and gave us different Bible verses that connect to the lesson. Now I know of some other students that want to lead a meeting.”
The meaning of FCA has been different for every student but the one thing most have in common is the importance of the community the club brings into people’s lives. Leffler continued, “FCA is important to me because I want to live the best Christian way possible and it really helps me understand my faith better by connecting me with like minded people.”
