Greeley West’s League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and Mexican American Studies Society (MASS) class have joined together to provide a sense of community and support for students while helping them embrace their culture heritage and identity.
The point of this club is to spread awareness about the culture in the community and at West too, so that this ethnicity will stop being overlooked. A member of the LULAC club, Briana Chairez said, “It is a way to spread awareness of all these different cultures because I think we have a lot of ethnicities here at West that are overshadowed a lot of the time so we are trying to give them that spotlight”
During Mexican American Heritage Month the students plan on doing several activities around the school to educate others about their culture. They plan on playing Hispanic music in the commons like West has in the past for Black History month. In addition to the music, “We are planning on decorating, putting up informative posters, and making announcements to spotlight some of the students that are Hispanic and Latin in this school that are doing an amazing job,” Chairez said.
LULAC and MASS is a way for these students to take on a leadership role while also getting the opportunity to volunteer at community events and put on bailes. “I love the environment, I love the people, and I love how involved we are with everything,” sophomore Diego Corrales said.
Chairez explained that her favorite part of the club is “the community we have built and the people we have met with our community service opportunities. Being able to meet other mentors because we had someone that writes poems come in and he is very famous in that type of industry so that was nice to hear.”
