Many students at West tend to ignore the smaller teams, but the boys golf team has had a great start to the season with many new athletes joining the team as well as past athletes setting new personal bests while fighting in a new more challenging league. With the end of the season approaching rapidly the student body should really pay attention to the progress this team has made this year and how they will continue to improve with years to come.
Head Coach Alexander Johnson is very proud of the team given the adversities they have had to face. “We are in a new conference this year with a bunch of 5A schools out of Fort Collins, Windsor, and Loveland – more golfing communities than Greeley has been a part of in the past – so we have things set up against us on that. But we are fighting to make our voices known,” Johnson stated.
Senior captain and West’s number one golfer Corbin Suntych is hopeful going into the rest of the season “Varsity is starting to pick the pace up, starting to figure things out and solidifying everything we can,” Suntych stated.
When asked about the noticeably larger size of the team Johnson seems very hopeful. “I chose to not make any cuts this year in hopes that more kids would become a part of the golf team here,” Johnson stated “The hope is more bodies, more chances at finding someone who will eventually become a player.”
Sophomore Elliot Leffler, the team’s 2nd ranked golfer, seems to be hopeful for the future of the team with the new size of the team. “There’s a lot of freshmen this year and that’s good but if they put in the time and effort that they should then then we can be really good in the future.”
