Board games were on our minds this week, given our Homecoming theme is Clue. We took a look at some of our favorite board games and counted them down. What board games do you think we missed?
5 – Backgammon
Students at Greeley West have probably heard of this game, but have never played it. It’s an older person game, so we’re sure that Ms. Freemole and Ms. Dent spend their Friday nights playing together. Backgammon gets points for coming in a suitcase style board a lot of the time. You could even use it as storage for more important things like your UNO cards.
4 – Chess
Greeley West has a Chess Club, so we know kids play this one. People have been playing Chess since it was invented in the 6th century. If a board game lasts 1500 years, it must be doing something right. Besides, what other game can you pretend to be smart while you laugh with your friends? Maybe the World Studies teachers should make Chess part of the curriculum with the kings and the queens in it.
3 – Snakes and Ladders
Whether you call it chutes or snakes, this game is sure to be a hit with the young kids in your family – or in our case, the freshmen at GWHS. It takes no reading, no writing, and you only have to be able to count to six. So simple, even Mr. Redman can figure it out.
2 – Clue
Clue would have been No. 1, but we decided to drop it a notch because of the lazy spirit week that we have had this week. All we could do was come up with dressing up in colors? C’mon – what about Animal Print day to celebrate Ms. Peacock? We could have had a Detective Day where kids dressed the part of an investigator. And what about Professor Plum? We could have dressed like our favorite fruit. We’ll just sit over here and be happy with No. 2 and dressing in green. (Also, read Kennedy’s editorial which inspired this rant.)
1 – Monopoly
Have you ever played an actual full game of Monopoly? It takes forever, kind of like Mr. Wagner’s lectures in Psychology. It also provides a great opportunity for players to cheat, whether you’re moving extra spaces, letting your friend get away rent-free, or robbing the bank one dollar bill at a time. Everybody knows how to play Monopoly so its very inclusive and easy to understand. It’s also the easiest way to make a younger sibling cry.
