For high school students, the week of Homecoming is an elaborate and fun time of dressing up, participating in creative activities, and going ballistic at the football game; except for the students at Greeley West High School.
We have been given, possibly, the worst Spirit Week any high school has ever seen. Monday: wear black, Tuesday: wear green, Wednesday: dress your best, Thursday: dress like a teacher, Friday: wear white. When I look at a Spirit Week that I am expected to enthusiastically participate in, I don’t expect to see three out of the five days being “wear a color.” Head of the homecoming assembly, junior Camden Cooney said, “I really just don’t think that they’re very creative at all.”
The lack of creativity in this Spirit Week drops Spartan Spirit to an all time low. Even the head of the Homecoming Spirit Week committee, junior Aliyha Reyna said, “It’s boring. It’s really boring.”
When the person who primarily created our Spirit Week is addressing its quality in a negative way, we know we’re doing something wrong. To have a spirit week this bad, makes me think that the Student Council was under a lot of pressure and had limited time. Boy, was I wrong. “We had around a month,” said Reyna.
I could come up with five spirit weeks in that amount of time.
While I understand the importance of choosing spirit days that everybody can participate in, it is also important to be creative and fun to get the most out of Homecoming week. Reyna said, “I had thoughts for Detective Day or Hollywood Stars and when I asked the Student Council they said it didn’t really make sense.”
Thankfully, Student Council got the memo and got to work on West vs. Central Spirit Week. I’ll see you dressed like a twin next week.
