Diversity Day 2.0 celebrated the cultures of Greeley West on Wednesday, following the PSAT Practice exams. For the second year in a row, students were immersed in fashion, dance, and foods of an international flavor.
Diversity Day is a way to celebrate the broad diversity of cultures at West and gives people a place to share their culture with new people. One of the organizer, CLD teacher Ms. Mary Salinas explained that the day features students who don’t usually get to speak up in classes. “It’s so important for all students to have a place where they can be themselves and they don’t always have that opportunity in math or English class,” Salinas said.
Students could map out their own Diversity Day, choosing four 20-minute sessions to participate in. Some of the ways West students celebrated included a car show, dancing, and presentations in order to help the spread of knowledge about the diverse cultures District 6 has at its schools.
Everybody has something to learn about one another according to Salinas. “There’s no possible way everybody can know everything about one another but we help people learn something about other,” Salinas explained.
One of the most popular sessions that Diversity Day offered was the traditional Mexican dance, Baile folklórico. Dances like these are an important part of Mexican culture, but they also remind us that culture should be shared and celebrated by all. Sophomore performer Cayden Serrano said, “It represents my culture and who I am,” Serrano said.
