The District 6 Athletics department has renewed talks about introducing a new gymnastics program to the Greeley Schools. This would be the first time a public school in Greeley would host a team in over 30 years.
District 6 Athletic Director Mr. Chris Cline described what a gynmanstics team looks like. “A varsity team usually consists of six gymnasts that compete in the 4 apparatus (Floor, Beam, Uneven Bars, and Vault) and All Around competitions. A normal 4A team in Colorado usually carries between 10 – 20 athletes,” Cline explained. “Tryouts would be completed by the coaching staff, the same as other sports. Each athlete would be judged on the 4 apparatus and then scored based upon the CHSAA scoring system. The high scores would make the team.”
Gymnastics is a fall sport for CHSAA, so its season starts in August and wraps up with a state meet in November. This year, regionals will be October 31-November 2. As details are formalized, practice location and what school hosts the team are considered. “The practices would be held at the off site gym that is proposing to host the team,” Cline explaiend. “We are currently looking at Northridge or Central to be the school host of the team so that the team could be classified as 4A.”
Students interested in gymnastics have something exciting to look forward too now that there is a closer opportunity. District 6 is targeting a Fall of 2026 start date for the sport.
Greeley West does have at least one gymnast, junior Delylah Ruiz who used to compete at Roosevelt High School, the closest current program. “I actually quit because I had to drive to Johnstown every day since that was the closest program,” Ruiz explained. “But with it coming to Greeley again I would think about doing it again.”
Ruiz said she thinks students would enjoy being part of the team. “I feel like if (a team) was closer, a lot more people would do it, because it is a really cool sport.”
