As students enter their final high school years, one question always arises: “Are you planning on going to college?” This varies depending on the student, but the worry about money always comes to mind no matter what. The subject of college being free can become very controversial. However, it needs to be talked about more.
When students go to college, they are typically entering adulthood which comes with its struggles to begin with. Living on your own, getting a job if you don’t have one already, paying for their post-secondary education, and much more. This is why I believe tuition should be lowered but not taken away.
Post-high school education is not always the route to success, nor is it something that every single student wants to do. So, if someone is to take that route, it should be cheaper. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to be accepted into some universities. So, instead of using expensive tuition, the payment should be the hard work that was put into things like academics, athletics, community service, etc. This way, students aren’t having to worry as much about the money part but more about putting in the effort to get to go to a college of their choice.
However, this is not to say just anyone should have access to college academics. I firmly believe that college is only necessary if your future career requires it for that profession such as the medical or law field. So, not everyone should be pressured into going to college, but if they do want to, it should cost at least a little something to show their true commitment and dedication to furthering their knowledge or career.
