The Greeley West dodgeball tournament featured a series of exciting matches with teams competing fiercely but in good spirits while also raising funds for the food drive to go to the Greeley Food Bank by bringing in cans of food. This event, which took place in the gym, saw participation from students and teachers all coming together for a good cause. The fundraiser not only helped gather the necessary funds, but also fostered a sense of community and teamwork among participants. Attendees cheered on their favorite teams, making it a memorable day for everyone involved.
Senior and vice president of student council Madison Vella expressed why the dodgeball tournament was created. “I think this time of year there are not that many school events like Homecoming and Spirit Week. They were all in September and October and in November and December it is really dead and so just to get more involvement,” Vella said.
“Students are always complaining about not having anything to do so this is an opportunity to have this event and hope for more school spirit,” Vella said.
More student involvement is always a goal at Greeley West whether it is in sports, clubs, or other extracurricular activities. “The purpose of it is really nice because it’s a food drive and this time is when food pantries get hit the hardest because it’s during the holidays,” Vella also mentioned.
Several students and teachers who were eager to contribute to a worthy cause while enjoying a friendly competition participated. The softball team created a team and Junior Iyanna Martinez who had great successes in the 2024 softball season mentioned, “I feel like helping out the community is a really big thing in what the softball program would like to be a part of.”
PE teacher Cruz Rodriguez said, “Hopefully kids will be more involved in extracurricular activities and learning how to get out of their comfort zone.”
